Love in the City by Jen Morris - Book Review

Synopsis

Have you ever stopped to look around at your life and realized nothing is how you want it? Turning thirty has a way of making you take a good, hard look at your life. And I think we all know what any sensible adult does in that situation: tequila shots. Lots of them. It’s okay, though, because I’ve finally escaped my tiny New Zealand home town and my negative parents. And New York is better than my wildest fantasies.

So is Michael, the sexy single dad who lives in the apartment upstairs. And he’s featuring in my fantasies more and more—even if he’s a grump and I only ever seem to make a dork of myself in front of him. Ah well, a girl can dream. Anyway, I’ve got a writing career to build, and writing about being single is fun. If that means swearing off men for a bit, that’s fine. I can totally do that. It’s just a tiny crush.

Besides… happily ever afters aren’t real. Are they?

Hello friends and lovers!

It’s midnight as I type this, I just finished Love in the City by Jen Morris and I loved every part of this sweet + steamy rom com. It felt like a true classic of what we love seeing in rom coms: a handsome man, a flawed heroine who is talented and beautiful, a bit silly in her own way, and best of all it is set in the heart of New York City!

Jen Morris’ debut novel, Love in the City is a sweet and steamy romance comedy about heroine, Alex, whom moves from New Zealand to New York to pursue her dreams of being a successful writer. We see her beautifully laid out journey, which becomes a sticky mess with the new friends she makes, her neighbors, and more. It’s a heartfelt romantic comedy that truly shows how dreams could come true in the Big Apple, New York City.

On Alex’s journey, we see her taking a leap toward her dreams of becoming a successful writer in New York City and finds herself in an upside down world when she arrives to New York. Things are not as they seem, but we see our gorgeous flawed heroine soon make friends, find a job, a romance between a handsome man. We see her ups and downs as she strives for her dream and often finds self-doubt in her minds. She’s a very relatable character and it was hard to put the book down!

Reading through the story made me nostalgic about my trip to New York last October and I swear I could envision the entire story playing on the streets of Manhattan. I swooned along with my pattering heart!

It was nice to find myself laughing at Alex and her clumsy ways, it felt like a classic rom com movie, and I’m a huge fan of those! Although I laughed to the point of glossy eyes, the story also had me tearing up over the ups and downs I went on with the character and her journey toward becoming a writer.

Its a brilliant story, especially for a debut novel by Indie Author Jen Morris. I’m officially a huge fan and can’t wait for more!

Below are highlights of the story along with the rating. All opinions are my own.

I would highly recommend this read, especially if you’re into steamy rom com stories! This is the perfect choice to snuggle up and read.

What I Enjoyed:

  • Alex and Michael were a great match made in rom com heaven!

  • Geoff was a great side character and my greedy self wished he was in it more! I wouldn’t mind seeing Geoff find love in the city😍

  • Obviously New York references. Going up to Top of the Rock, which I am envious of! I opted to visit the Empire State Building on my last visit. But my next one will include Top of the Rock!

  • The twists and turns were fun in the story! Just when I thought I knew what was coming, I was surprised!!

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Alex is a great character, but I found myself wanting to shake her a bit when it came to Michael. I wish she was more understanding right away, but then again… there wouldn’t be the good tension Jen built in the story. Honestly, this is me just finding something for this, but in reality the book is a 5/5!

Steamy Rating: 💋💋💋/ 5

  • Although it is steamy, personally I enjoy more erotic type scenes, so I have to give this one a 3 on the steamy scale. This is more of a sweet and romantic story! It is steamy though none the less!

  • However, I do like that Alex isn’t the type of girl to feel like the man has to make the first move. That’s always refreshing!
